on repeat

there was a song i really liked in the 90s called, 'i like repetitive music'. i liked it because i agreed with its salient and prescient satirical assessment of a cultural moment. no wait ... actually, i just liked it coz it was regurgitator and at the time i thought they were amazing.

it was that transition point when electronic music was emerging into the mainstream and one of the criticisms of it was its apparent mindless looping of samples. the lyrics to the song were:
    i like repetitive music
    i like repetitive music
    i like repetitive music
    i like repetitive music
    i like repetitive music
                 (and so on ...)

clever, no?

repetition becomes pattern. pattern is recognisable transitions of form. when i was researching the meaning of pattern for this photo diary i found this:
"A pattern has an integrity independent of the medium by virtue of which you have received the information that it exists."

genius.

the quote comes from an architect/engineer called R. Buckminster Fuller. he's most famous for 'inventing' geodesic domes. here's a pretty tacky little animated example of one ....

you should totally google him - he's great. anyway, it was these meandering thoughts that came out of this week's photo diary on ... repetitive patterns:
